Japan Africa Exchange Scholarship Overview
The Japan Africa Exchange Scholarship is designed to support researchers from Kyoto University who wish to conduct research in Africa and for scholars from Kyoto University’s partner institutions in Africa who want to study in Kyoto.
The Canon Foundation in Europe, established on December 22, 1987, is a nonprofit organization that aims to promote international cultural and scientific relations between Europe and Japan. While it is financially and legally independent, it works closely with Canon Europa N.V., which provided the initial funding.
Canon Foundation Kyoto University Scholarship Requirements
To be eligible for the Canon Foundation Kyoto University Scholarship, you must:
- Hold at least a Master’s degree.
- Be employed as a postdoctoral fellow or faculty member at Kyoto University or one of its partner institutions at the time of application.
- African applicants must provide one reference letter from their prospective host at Kyoto University and show proof of existing partnerships to apply.

Japan Africa Exchange Scholarship Duration and Benefits
- Stipend: Successful applicants will receive between €22,500 and €27,500 annually, with the amount adjusted based on the length of the research period.
- Travel Expenses: Travel costs will also be covered.
- The Canon Foundation in Europe (CFE) will handle all payments and provide details to selected candidates.
Required Documents
To apply, you will need to submit the following documents to the Kyoto University Africa Unit (africaunit@kura.kyoto-u.ac.jp):
- Research Plan: Include the research title, start and end dates, and a cost estimate covering living, travel, and research expenses (max 2 pages).
- Two Reference Letters: One letter should discuss your academic and professional qualifications, and the other should be from your prospective host at Kyoto University.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Copy of Doctoral Certificate or highest academic degree.
- Passport-Sized Photo
- List of Academic Publications or professional achievements, arranged chronologically, with details of all authors, year, place of publication, and page numbers.
