2025 Honjo International Scholarship Details

The Honjo International Scholarship is available for international students who want to pursue a Master’s or PhD at a graduate school in Japan.

The Honjo Foundation helps foreign students achieve their academic goals at Japanese universities. You can apply in either Japanese or English, and you don’t need to be pre-selected by the university.

Requirements for the 2025 Honjo International Scholarship

To apply for the 2025 scholarship, you need to:

  • Be an international student.
  • Be enrolled or applying to start a graduate program in Japan in April 2025. Both current students and those not yet enrolled (including those with jobs) can apply.
  • Have a strong desire to work in your home country after graduation.
  • Understand international friendship and goodwill. You should attend foundation events and be active in the alumni network.
  • Be able to speak Japanese for daily conversations, as interviews will be in Japanese.
  • Start a PhD by age 35 or a Master’s by age 30 (no exceptions).
  • Be enrolled in a program that lasts longer than 12 months.

Scholarship Benefits and Duration

The scholarship provides:

  • Â¥230,000 per month for 1-2 year programs
  • Â¥210,000 per month for 3-year programs
  • Â¥180,000 per month for 4-5 year programs

Note: The scholarship amount is fixed once it starts. If your program is shorter than a year, you are not eligible to apply. The scholarship also includes a travel grant for attending international conferences, according to the foundation’s rules.
